Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne

  • 1990
  • Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India

Founded the Sarvodaya Shramdan Movement in 1958 in Sri Lanka. Shramdan has since become a household word in the context of self-help. Sarvodaya was legally incorporated by an Act of Sri Lankan Parliament. It is one of the largest NGOs in the Third World. Sarvodaya has come to be regarded as a way of ‘building of a social infrastructure'. The movement has also led to establishment of Shanti Sena (Peace Brigade) which organizes inter-community living and exchange. Another initiative for peace is ‘People's Peace Offensive' (PPO). Thus Dr. Ariyaratne is playing a dynamic role in the transformation of Sri Lanka.
